Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mine operations, which has been producing zinc concentrate for customers around the world since 2017.
The mine is committed to a low-carbon future. In April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33% and this is just the start of its renewable energy transition.
Dugald River employs around 750 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. The village provides all the amenities including a gym, with a women’s only area, a tennis court, swimming pool, walking track and entertainment area.
Geotechnical Engineer
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, this role is responsible to ensure correct and professional application of geotechnical principles to the planning and operation at Dugald River, so that compliance with Company Standards for Ground Control is achieved and maintained. This role offers an opportunity to provide strategic input to the sustainable operation of Dugald River Mine including providing recommendation for managing risks and hazards associated with LOM design.
The role is available on a FIFO (Brisbane or Townsville) or drive-in drive-out basis (DIDO) from the Cloncurry or Mount Isa Districts. The role will operate on an 8/6 roster. Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of one of our point of hires.
With demonstrated experience as a Geotechnical Engineer within underground mining, you will have well-developed skills and personal attributes including the following:
- An unwavering commitment to workplace safety.
- Underground mining experience, hard rock mining environment is preferred.
- Passion for improving day-to-day operations and contributing to the overall inclusive workforce culture of Dugald River.
- Strong communication, negotiation and influencing capabilities.
- Ability to engage stakeholders effectively in technical and operational roles.
- Experience in related software packages including Deswik, Rocscience, RS3 and IMS.
- Tertiary qualification/s in either Civil, Geotechnical and/or Mining Engineering or Geology is preferred.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provide geotechnical services to enhance safety and optimize production, including seismic monitoring and drill design reviews.
- Conduct underground inspections, produce ground control designs, and assess stope designs for near- to mid-term planning.
- Develop monitoring systems for rock mass deformation, lead ground control audits, and implement QAQC measures.
- Manage long-term monitoring and rehabilitation programs for critical infrastructure and collaborate with ACG researchers.
- Collect and analyse geotechnical data to inform operations and identify emerging risks.
- Collect and interpret geotechnical data including core logging, rock face mapping and instrumentation.
- Design and provide operational input into backfill plans for mined voids.
